Team Nigeria finished seventh on the final medal table at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, emerging as the highest-ranked African nation after an impressive campaign.
Competing in 10 sports, the Nigerian contingent won a total of 24 medals—10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze.
Nigeria’s first gold medal came through Esther Nworgu, who delivered a dominant performance to win the women’s lightweight para powerlifting title.
Several other athletes also produced standout performances during the Games. Ezekiel Nathaniel claimed gold in the men’s 400m hurdles, while Goodness Nwachukwu broke her own world record to win the women’s F42 discus throw event.
Idris Rilwan secured gold in the men’s para powerlifting competition, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s shot put.
Other gold medallists included Samuel Ogazi in the men’s 400m, Ruth Didih and Hauwa Lawal in weightlifting, and Chukwuebuka Umoafia, who also topped the podium in the men’s weightlifting event.
Australia finished at the top of the medal standings with 65 gold, 41 silver and 52 bronze medals. England placed second with 26 gold, 41 silver and 35 bronze medals, while Canada completed the top three with 18 gold, 20 silver and 21 bronze medals.
Nigeria’s seventh-place finish marked one of its strongest performances at the Commonwealth Games and underscored the country’s growing strength across athletics, para sports and weightlifting.
