The Super Falcons are expected to have a new technical crew in place ahead of the start of Nigeria’s 2028 Women’s Olympic qualifying campaign in October.
Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, disclosed this following the Nigeria Football Federation’s decision to ask the current technical crew, led by coach Justine Madugu, to step down after the team’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The NFF now faces the task of appointing a new coaching team for the 10-time African champions, with Nigeria’s Olympic qualifying campaign approaching.
Speaking on the plans for the team, Olopade said the government was determined to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the Olympic Games.
“The Olympics are around the corner, we will see how we can tweak the technical team of the Falcons like we did for the U-23, which coach Eric Chelle will handle. This is because we are desirous of qualifying for the Olympics,” Olopade said.
The Super Falcons endured a difficult campaign at the 2026 WAFCON, opening their Group C campaign with a 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi.
Nigeria eventually reached the quarter-finals but suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon, marking the first time the Super Falcons had been eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the competition.
The defeat also ended Nigeria’s hopes of securing automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Falcons were subsequently given another opportunity to qualify through the African play-off route but failed to take it, losing 2-1 to South Africa.
With the 2028 Olympic qualifiers scheduled to begin in October, the NFF is now under pressure to appoint a technical crew capable of guiding the Super Falcons through the qualification campaign and securing Nigeria’s return to the Olympic Games.
