Nigeria’s Super Eagles have maintained their 26th position in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings but have slipped to fourth in Africa following the release of the updated standings on Monday, July 20.
The three-time African champions retained their global ranking after their most recent outing, a 2-1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly in June. With no competitive fixtures played since then, the result had little impact on Nigeria’s overall position.
However, the Super Eagles lost ground on the continent after Egypt climbed above them following an impressive run to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup before bowing out to eventual finalists Argentina.
Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked nation after reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup. The Atlas Lions also moved up one place to sixth in the global rankings.
Senegal are ranked second in Africa despite dropping three places in the world rankings, while Egypt now occupy third position on the continent. Algeria complete Africa’s top five after slipping one place globally.
At the top of the FIFA rankings, newly crowned world champions Spain have reclaimed the number one position after defeating Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Argentina dropped to second in the world, while France, England and Brazil complete the top five teams in the latest global standings.
FIFA is expected to publish its next men’s world rankings on October 7, 2026.
