A Nigerian soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, has reportedly killed his wife before taking his own life at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.
The tragic incident, according to a statement by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, occurred on October 11, 2025, within the 221 Battalion quarters of the cantonment.
The statement noted that the bodies of the soldier and his wife were discovered in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters.
“The 22 Armoured Brigade, Nigerian Army, is aware of the news in respect of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving at 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, who is suspected to have killed his wife and committed suicide,” the statement read in part.
Captain Nwankwo explained that preliminary investigation revealed that the soldier, who was on duty within the cantonment, had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters shortly before the incident occurred.
He added that the corpses have been preserved as an in-depth investigation has commenced to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this incident and commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss. The Army also prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” the statement added.
The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured the public that the incident would be thoroughly investigated and the findings made public.
“The Army anticipates maximum understanding and cooperation of the public as always, assuring that the outcome of the investigation will not only be made public but also thoroughly reviewed to prevent future occurrences,” the statement concluded.
