The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has reaffirmed its commitment to investigate all credible allegations of child abuse or misconduct in daycare centres across Nigeria.
The agency’s position follows renewed debate on social media over past posts by singer Simi about her experience assisting at her mother’s daycare between 2012 and 2013.
The discussion resurfaced after the singer spoke out against rape culture online, prompting some users to revisit her earlier comments. While some critics interpreted the posts as inappropriate, others described them as harmless reflections of routine childcare interactions.
In response to the controversy, Simi clarified that she had been recounting ordinary experiences with playful children at the time, noting that she was 23 and not yet in the public spotlight when the posts were made.
Despite her explanation, some social media users called for authorities to review daycare practices more closely, urging a formal examination of childcare environments.
Reacting to the situation, NAPTIP issued a public notice on Tuesday, stating that it would thoroughly investigate any credible reports relating to child abuse or misconduct in daycare settings.
The agency also encouraged individuals with factual information, direct knowledge, or evidence to come forward confidentially through direct messages on X or via email to info@naptip.gov.ng.
