The SHIFT Initiative has provided artisans and entrepreneurs in Plateau State with practical financial and business-management training aimed at strengthening their enterprises and improving long-term sustainability.
The one-day programme was organised in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Goals Project Support Unit, Plateau State, as part of a wider training and empowerment intervention for grassroots entrepreneurs.
Led by Executive Director Ulan V. Jatau, PhD, alongside members of the SHIFT team, the sessions focused on practical financial literacy, budgeting, bookkeeping, record-keeping, digital finance, modern business management and sustainable entrepreneurship.
The training responded to the reality that many artisans possess strong technical and vocational skills but may lack the financial knowledge required to manage income, control expenditure, monitor profitability and expand their businesses effectively.
Participants were guided on separating personal and business finances, maintaining proper records, reinvesting earnings and making informed business decisions.
The programme also complemented the equipment and financial support provided under the wider intervention. Beneficiaries were drawn from across Plateau State’s 17 local government areas, reinforcing the programme’s commitment to inclusive economic empowerment.
Dr. Jatau’s involvement reflected her continued commitment to education, mentorship and community development. Through a practical teaching approach, she and the SHIFT team translated important financial concepts into lessons participants could apply directly to their businesses.
The Plateau State Government, represented by Deputy Governor Ngo Josephine Piyo, reaffirmed its commitment to initiatives that equip women, young people and vulnerable groups with the skills and resources required to participate meaningfully in economic development.
By strengthening the financial capacity of artisans, SHIFT Initiative is helping small-business owners protect their investments, improve profitability, create jobs and contribute more sustainably to their communities.
