Russia Says Three-Way Peace Talks With Ukraine, US Could Resume

Russia has said it does not rule out the resumption of three-way peace talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States as diplomatic efforts to end the war gain fresh momentum.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the remarks on Monday, September 7, following a weekend visit to Moscow and Kyiv by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

The two American officials met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow before travelling to Kyiv for discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Peskov said Moscow was open to restarting the trilateral format but noted that it was too early to determine when or where another round of negotiations could take place.

“Russia does not rule out the resumption of this trilateral format,” Peskov said, while stressing that no exact dates or venue had been agreed.

The latest diplomatic push is aimed at reviving negotiations that have been stalled for months over major disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv, particularly territorial and security issues.

A senior Ukrainian presidential source said the US envoys had brought what was described as more effective proposals for ending the conflict, although the meetings did not immediately produce a breakthrough.

Peskov also said the Kremlin did not rule out a possible telephone conversation between Putin and US President Donald Trump to discuss the outcome of the American envoys’ diplomatic mission.

He added that Moscow viewed Washington’s efforts positively and appreciated Trump’s stated commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Meanwhile, Zelensky has also indicated that another trilateral meeting involving Russia, Ukraine and the US remains possible, although no agreement has yet been reached on when such talks would take place.

The renewed diplomatic efforts come amid continued fighting between Russia and Ukraine. Russia resumed missile and drone strikes on Kyiv on Tuesday after a brief pause during the visit of the US envoys, with Ukrainian officials reporting civilian casualties.

Despite the renewed diplomatic activity, significant obstacles remain before a comprehensive peace agreement can be reached, with Moscow and Kyiv still deeply divided over territory and other key terms of a potential settlement.
