The management of Wisdom Gate International School has confirmed the death of a two-year-old child in its care following a tragic incident on March 17, 2026.
In a statement issued on April 8, the school expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to the grieving family and describing the incident as heartbreaking.
According to the school, the child was attended to immediately after the accident and rushed for urgent medical care. Management added that the matter was promptly reported to relevant authorities and that it is cooperating fully to ensure a thorough investigation.
“Out of respect for the family and the ongoing process, we will refrain from further public commentary. However, we remain open to lawful and constructive engagement,” the statement read.
However, the incident has been trailed by allegations of negligence and a possible cover-up. A social media commentator, identified as Certified Courtist, claimed the child died after a poorly mounted bookshelf collapsed on her while she was asleep in class.
The commentator further alleged that the shelf had not been properly secured and fell directly on the toddler, causing fatal injuries. He also claimed that the school initially provided conflicting accounts of the incident and failed to promptly notify the parents.
Additional allegations suggest that evidence at the scene may have been tampered with, including claims that blood-stained materials were cleaned and the fallen shelf was removed from the classroom.
The case was initially reported at the Umukoro Police Station before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where an autopsy was conducted. Preliminary findings reportedly indicate that the child died from injuries sustained from the falling object.
The family has reportedly raised concerns over the handling of the case, alleging delays in the release of the autopsy report and lack of accountability from authorities. Questions have also been raised about supervision at the time of the incident.
As investigations continue, the tragic death has sparked public concern over safety standards in schools and the need for accountability in childcare institutions.
