A group of retired police officers on Thursday staged a protest at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, decrying the non-payment of pensions and entitlements years after serving the country.

The elderly protesters, many appearing weak and frail, carried placards and sang protest songs, accusing the Federal Government of abandoning them after decades of loyal service.

“We have been turned to beggars after 35 years of service,” one of the retirees lamented. “How can a country be safe when those who protected it are treated this way?”

Their protest rekindles the demand for the abolition of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), which the retirees described as a “fraudulent arrangement” that has left them impoverished. They are calling for a return to the Defined Benefits Scheme, arguing that it offers fairer compensation.

In October, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, joined the retirees at a similar protest in Abuja, pledging his continued support until their demands are met.

Sowore condemned the government’s handling of pensioners’ welfare, insisting that those who served Nigeria faithfully deserve dignity, not hardship.

“I’m not just fighting for the police; I’m fighting with retired policemen. You started this struggle, and I’ll continue to support you,” Sowore declared.

He also criticised the political class for enjoying luxury and allowances while retired officers and civil servants struggle to survive, urging unity among all pensioners across security and civil services.

“If those in power refuse to listen, one day the people will rise,” he warned. “For too long, they’ve taken advantage of Nigerians’ patience, believing people will always pray rather than act — but one day, prayers will stop.”

Sowore praised the retirees for their peaceful protest, noting that their agitation has brought renewed attention to the plight of pensioners nationwide.
