Tension erupted in Kofan Kaura, Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Friday after residents publicly burned campaign posters of Governor Abdullahi Sule, alongside flags and brooms of the All Progressives Congress, in protest against his 2027 senatorial ambition.

The demonstrators expressed anger through chants rejecting what they described as political imposition and electoral manipulation. Video clips circulating on social media showed protesters setting political materials ablaze, with captions such as “We reject rigging” and “We reject imposition.”

The unrest comes in the wake of Governor Sule’s decision to contest the Nasarawa North senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, despite an earlier public pledge that he would not seek elective office after completing his tenure as governor.

Sule, who is currently serving his second term, had reportedly secured the APC senatorial ticket for the district in a landslide primary victory, polling 47,393 votes against 2,915 secured by his closest rival, Silas Agara.

Despite the outcome of the primary, some residents have continued to express opposition to his political move, citing dissatisfaction with his reversal of an earlier promise and accusing the process of lacking inclusivity.

The protest in Kofan Kaura reflects growing political tension within parts of Nasarawa State as parties and stakeholders intensify positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Security agencies were yet to issue an official statement on whether arrests were made or whether the situation had been fully contained at the time of filing this report.
