Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, accusing them of prioritising political activities over efforts to secure the release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State on May 15, 2026.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku expressed concern that while families continue to await the safe return of the victims, the federal government appears more focused on political engagements than on addressing the kidnapping crisis with the urgency it deserves.
The former vice president directed particular criticism at the First Lady, alleging that some of the activities that have attracted public criticism were personally presided over by her.
According to Atiku, a motherly response to such a tragedy would involve using every available platform to draw national attention to the plight of the abducted children and teachers until they are safely reunited with their families.
He argued that celebrations, political events, and the distribution of gifts to political supporters send the wrong message at a time when affected families are grappling with uncertainty and emotional distress.
Atiku further condemned what he described as political pageantry in the midst of a national tragedy, insisting that leadership should demonstrate empathy, compassion, and a sense of urgency during periods of crisis.
He maintained that Nigerians expect their leaders to focus on securing lives and addressing security challenges rather than engaging in festivities while citizens remain in captivity.
The statement adds to growing public discourse surrounding the government’s response to the abduction and broader concerns about insecurity in parts of the country.
