The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Adewale Ogoemi Arojah for allegedly impersonating a renowned prophet on Facebook and defrauding unsuspecting worshippers of more than ₦18 million.
The arrest followed a complaint filed on October 3, 2026, by Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun.” According to the police, members of the public had reported fraudulent activities being carried out through a duplicate Facebook account created in the cleric’s name.
Following the complaint, operatives of the Ilaro Division reportedly used intelligence-led monitoring to track the suspect to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where he was arrested.
The police said the suspect confessed during interrogation to impersonating the prophet and using his identity to offer fake prophecies and prayer services to people seeking spiritual assistance. Investigators further alleged that he targeted victims both in Nigeria and abroad and collected more than ₦18 million from them.
The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation. Police said the investigation would determine the full extent of the alleged fraud, identify possible accomplices and establish grounds for prosecution.
The Ogun State Police Command has advised members of the public to exercise caution and verify the identities of religious leaders and public figures before engaging with them or sending money through social media platforms.
