Pope Leo XIV has criticised exploitation, corruption, and inequality during a visit to the diamond-rich northeast of Angola, warning that natural wealth often benefits only a few while many citizens remain in poverty.

Speaking on Monday, April 20, during an open-air Mass in Saurimo, capital of Lunda Sul province, the pontiff said many people’s hopes are being undermined by violence, injustice, and the concentration of wealth in the hands of the powerful.

He noted that when injustice prevails, “the bread of all becomes the possession of a few,” urging leaders and societies to address deep-rooted inequality.

The visit is part of his ongoing 11-day tour of Africa, where he has repeatedly spoken out against resource exploitation, poor governance, and social injustice.

Saurimo lies close to the Catoca diamond mine, which produces a significant share of Angola’s diamonds, yet the surrounding region continues to face widespread poverty and underdevelopment.

Authorities said tens of thousands of worshippers attended the Mass, with crowds also gathering along the streets to catch a glimpse of the Pope despite tight security arrangements.

Earlier in the day, Pope Leo visited a home for elderly residents, many of whom have been affected by neglect or past violence, where he received emotional welcomes from those in care.

Despite being one of Africa’s major oil and diamond producers, Angola continues to struggle with inequality, with a large portion of its population living below the poverty line.

The Pope also addressed government officials, including President João Lourenço, urging stronger action against corruption and the misuse of national resources.

He is expected to continue his visit in Angola with meetings with clergy before proceeding to Equatorial Guinea, the final stop of his African tour.
