Pope Leo XIV Announces Surgery After Lung Growth Is Discovered

Pope Leo XIV has announced plans to undergo surgery after doctors discovered a small growth in his lung during a recent medical examination.

The 71-year-old pontiff disclosed the development on Sunday, October 11, 2026, while addressing worshippers during his weekly Angelus prayer at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

According to the Pope, the lung nodule was detected at a very early stage and remains well-localised. He said his doctors had recommended surgery to remove it and that the procedure had been scheduled for the coming days.

The Vatican has not disclosed whether the growth is benign or cancerous. However, officials indicated that the Pope’s recovery from the operation is expected to take approximately one week.

Pope Leo thanked the faithful for their spiritual support and prayers as he prepares for the procedure.

Despite the health concern, the pontiff is expected to undertake an 11-day pastoral visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17, although it remains unclear whether the surgery and recovery period will affect his travel plans.

Pope Leo XIV, who was elected in May 2025, has not previously been known to have major health problems. The planned surgery represents a significant health development during his papacy.

The Vatican has yet to provide further details about the nature of the lung growth.
