Police warns as Plateau council workers protest blocking roads

Movement and activities at the secretariat of the 17 local government areas of Plateau State were on Wednesday paralyzed following protests by the council workers.

At the famous Secretariat Junction in the city center in Jos town had difficulty with movement, in the Jos South LGA, the aggrieved workers blocked the Jos -Abuja highway causing gridlock. READ HERE

In Qua’an Pan LGA, the workers displayed placards, chanting anti-government songs.

The Chairman of the Plateau State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, James Diwa, told The PUNCH on Wednesday that the workers were not happy because the governor had not implemented the N30,000 minimum wage for the LG workers.

The chairman said, “The problem has to do with the implementation of the new minimum wage in the state.

“When government started to pay the state workers with the new minimum wage, we advised them to also extend same to the council workers but it is clear that out advice was not taken. Government should be ready to face whatever comes out of its decision.”

Meanwhile, the Plateau State Police Command in a statement by its spokesman, Ubah  Ogaba, warned protesting workers against disrupting public peace in the state.

“The command is very much aware that the state government is dialogue with the teachers and the council workers for the amicable resolution of the matter,” he added.
