The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of two persons following a suspected drug-related incident in Isara-Remo, while two others are receiving treatment in hospital.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday at Oke-Ola Phase II in Isara-Remo, where four young persons allegedly consumed a substance popularly referred to as “laughing gas,” believed to be among substances abused by some youths.
A resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the four individuals allegedly inhaled the substance, resulting in the death of two of them, while the remaining two were rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
There were reports that the victims were students of the Ogun State-owned Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade. However, the police said the identities and affiliations of the deceased have yet to be confirmed.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said investigations were ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths.
According to him, the command is investigating a suspected drug-related case in which two persons were found dead while two others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming an illicit substance.
Babaseyi disclosed that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, while the survivors are currently receiving medical treatment.
He urged members of the public, particularly young people, to avoid substance abuse, warning of the serious health risks associated with the use of illicit drugs.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. Repeated calls to the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Folorunso Adedayo, were not answered, while a message sent via WhatsApp had yet to receive a response.
Police say investigations are continuing to establish the identities of the victims and the exact cause of the incident.
