Tension flared on Monday in Gashish community of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area as a group of women staged a protest over persistent killings and insecurity, dismantling a military checkpoint in the process.
The protesters, mostly dressed in black and chanting mournful songs, marched through the community demanding urgent government intervention. Many carried tree branches and placards, accusing security agencies of failing to protect residents despite the presence of troops.
Eyewitnesses said the protest took a dramatic turn when the women converged on the checkpoint located along a major access road into the village. In an expression of frustration, they pulled down parts of the structure, insisting it had failed to prevent repeated attacks on their communities.
“We are tired of burying our husbands and children,” one of the protesters lamented. “The soldiers are here, yet our people keep getting killed. What is the checkpoint doing for us?”
Residents said the demonstration was triggered by recent attacks in nearby settlements that reportedly left several people dead and others displaced. The women alleged that attackers often strike at night and escape before security forces can respond.
Community leaders appealed for calm, warning that the destruction of security infrastructure could further expose the area to danger. They, however, acknowledged the growing frustration among residents.
“The people are angry because they feel exposed,” a youth leader said. “Each attack leads to loss of lives, abandoned farms, and yet nothing seems to change.”
Security sources confirmed the incident, noting that no casualties were recorded during the protest. Efforts are said to be ongoing to restore calm and engage community stakeholders.
Barkin Ladi Local Government Area has witnessed recurring violence in recent years, with communities repeatedly calling for improved security measures and better intelligence gathering.
As of press time, authorities had yet to issue an official statement, while residents remain anxious, hoping the protest will prompt urgent action to address the security challenges in the area.
