The Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the arrest and public parading of its former lawmakers, including a former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing the action as politically motivated.
In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Jonathan Amande, the PDP alleged that the arrests were instigated by leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, using the EFCC as a tool for political persecution.
According to the statement, the arrest and parade of 14 former lawmakers were part of an orchestrated attempt to discredit the PDP and intimidate its members ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the parading of our members like common criminals,” Amande said. “This is nothing short of a political witch-hunt aimed at suppressing opposition voices and destabilising the current PDP-led administration in the state.”
The party further claimed that despite inheriting “numerous messes” from the previous APC administration, the PDP government has chosen to focus on development rather than pursue retribution. It warned that the continued misuse of federal institutions like the EFCC for partisan interests could endanger Nigeria’s democratic process and violate the rights of citizens.
Calling for calm among its members, the PDP urged supporters not to be distracted by what it described as the APC’s “antics.” The party reaffirmed its commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law, encouraging citizens to remain vigilant against any manipulation of state institutions.
“The PDP remains steadfast and will resist any attempt to undermine democracy in Plateau State and Nigeria at large,” the statement concluded.
