The socio-political group, Plateau Vanguard for Democracy (PVD), has praised Senator Simon Bako Lalong for what it described as a “statesmanlike” decision to hand over the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, following the governor’s recent defection to the party.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Christopher Ishaku, and made available to journalists on Tuesday, PVD said Lalong’s move marks a turning point in Plateau politics, especially considering the long-standing tension between the two leaders after the 2023 governorship election.

Lalong, a former governor, had backed Professor Nentawe Yilwatda as his preferred successor in that election, which was eventually won by Mutfwang. The rivalry that ensued had, for months, shaped opposition politics in the state.

However, the group noted that Lalong’s decision to yield party leadership to Mutfwang, despite their past differences, reflects political maturity and a commitment to placing the collective interest of Plateau above personal or factional considerations.

PVD further highlighted that the new alignment presents a strategic opportunity for the state. With Nentawe Yilwatda now serving as National Chairman of the APC and Mutfwang as governor on the same platform, major political stakeholders are “in the same ship.”

“This convergence offers Plateau an uncommon chance to consolidate influence at both state and national levels,” the statement said.

The group called on supporters of both Mutfwang and Lalong to close ranks and collaborate to protect the political and developmental interests of the state. It also emphasized that unity is vital in addressing rising insecurity in parts of Plateau.

“Political stability will make it easier for the state to mobilize resources, coordinate security responses, and project Plateau’s concerns more effectively at the national level,” the statement said.

PVD cautioned against actions that could reignite political divisions, warning that internal fractures would weaken Plateau’s ability to tackle insecurity and pursue development.

“The moment calls for cooperation rather than recrimination,” it added, urging all stakeholders to support collaborative governance and resist provocations.

The group concluded that Plateau stands at a defining moment and must seize the opportunity to move forward as one people.
