In a move aimed at strengthening transparency and protecting citizens’ rights, the Plateau State Commissioner for Transport, Davou Gyang Jatau, has inaugurated an independent committee to investigate allegations of misconduct and excesses by officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, the commissioner highlighted the critical role of the transport sector in economic development and social cohesion across Plateau State. He acknowledged the VIO’s mandate to ensure vehicle safety, enforce traffic regulations, and promote roadworthiness but stressed that enforcement must remain within legal and ethical boundaries.
“The transport sector is a pillar of our economy, and the Vehicle Inspection Office plays a crucial role in ensuring road safety. Yet recent complaints have raised concerns over misconduct, harassment, and overzealous enforcement by some officials,” he said.
Committee Mandate and Timeline
The committee, composed of members selected for their integrity and professional experience, is tasked with reviewing petitions, investigating reported incidents, identifying systemic issues, and recommending corrective measures. It has been given two weeks from February 20 to submit its report.

Opportunity to Improve Service Delivery
Addressing VIO officers and leadership, Jatau emphasized that the investigation is not intended as condemnation but as an opportunity to strengthen professionalism, refine operational guidelines, and improve service delivery.
“This process is a chance to reinforce respect for citizens and enhance institutional credibility,” he noted.
He urged members of the public to cooperate with the committee and provide credible information where necessary, stressing that constructive engagement is essential for meaningful reform.
Government Pledges Reforms
The commissioner reassured residents that the state government will implement practical reforms based on the committee’s findings. Planned measures include strengthening discipline, enhancing staff training, and ensuring traffic law enforcement is conducted with firmness and compassion.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to good governance, transparency, and continuous oversight of public institutions.
