Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has appealed to Nigerians to give him the opportunity to lead the country, as he formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the appeal on Friday at a news conference in Onitsha, Anambra State, where he outlined his vision for addressing some of the country’s major challenges.
According to him, Nigeria is facing serious economic and social difficulties, including unemployment, unreliable electricity, insecurity, poor infrastructure and the high cost of doing business.
Obi said his economic agenda would focus on increasing production, encouraging investment and creating more jobs for Nigerians. He cited his private-sector experience, educational background and tenure as governor of Anambra State as part of his qualifications for the presidency.
He also highlighted the experience of his running mate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, particularly in the areas of education, skills development and infrastructure.
The former governor said a government led by him would prioritise investment in human capital and ensure that public resources are used more efficiently.
Obi urged Nigerians to critically examine the programmes of all presidential candidates, ask difficult questions and demand clear evidence to support their promises.
He also called for issue-based campaigns, urging politicians to engage in debates without hatred and compete without resorting to violence.
On agriculture, Obi pledged to support farmers by protecting farming communities, expanding irrigation, improving rural roads and connecting farmers with markets and financing opportunities.
He also promised to strengthen Nigeria’s manufacturing sector, with a focus on increasing the production and export of finished goods while ensuring the country derives greater value from its natural resources.
On security, Obi said his administration would improve intelligence sharing and coordination among security agencies, strengthen policing and border control, and deploy technology to identify and prevent threats.
He stressed that farmers, students and business owners cannot fully contribute to the country’s development if they cannot move and operate safely.
