Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to serving only one term if elected as Nigeria’s president in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Obi emphasized that his vow to serve a single four-year term is unwavering and grounded in his principles of purposeful and accountable leadership.

“My one-term, four-year vow is sacrosanct,” Obi declared, adding that the promise is not a political gimmick but a solemn commitment to deliver impactful governance within a limited timeframe.

Drawing inspiration from historic leaders, Obi referenced former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and former South African President Nelson Mandela, both of whom made lasting impacts without clinging to power. “John F. Kennedy did not even complete a full term, yet his vision and ideals continue to inspire generations,” he said. “In Africa, Nelson Mandela, revered globally as a symbol of justice and reconciliation, chose to serve only one term as President of South Africa, despite immense public pressure to stay longer. His decision was a deliberate act of leadership — a statement that power must serve the people, not the self.”

Addressing doubts raised by critics who question the sincerity of his pledge, Obi said their skepticism stems from a political culture where promises are often broken. “I understand the basis of their scepticism. They are judging me by their own standards — where political promises are made to be broken,” he noted. “But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth. I have a verifiable track record that speaks louder than speculation.”

The former Anambra State governor stressed that leadership, in his view, is not about tenure longevity but about effectiveness and transparency. “My vow to serve only one term of four years is a solemn commitment, rooted in my conviction that purposeful, transparent leadership does not require an eternity,” he concluded.

Obi’s renewed promise is expected to shape conversations around the 2027 elections, as he positions himself once again as a candidate with a reform-driven agenda and a disciplined approach to governance.
