The Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), has held the grand finale of its Peace and Unity Football Competition and launched the distribution of writing materials to schools in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The event, held on Sunday, 19 October 2025, drew dignitaries from within and outside Plateau State, marking another milestone in the military’s ongoing efforts to strengthen civil-military relations through non-kinetic engagements.

In his keynote address, the Special Guest of Honour and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army/Commander OPEP, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, emphasized that the initiative reflects the military’s commitment to fostering peace and unity through community-driven activities. He noted that sports and education are powerful tools for promoting understanding, collaboration, and lasting harmony among communities.

Major General Oyinlola urged residents of Mangu to imbibe the positive values of teamwork, tolerance, and discipline that sports promote, while reaffirming the military’s resolve to protect law-abiding citizens and maintain peace in the region. He also encouraged community members to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements to security agencies.

Earlier, the Commander Sector 2, Colonel S.O. Fagbemi, explained that the competition brought together youths from eight major ethnic groups in Mangu, providing a platform for interaction, unity, and friendship beyond ethnic or religious lines. He assured residents of continued security and peace across the local government and its hinterlands.

The Chairman of Mangu LGA, Hon. Emmanuel Bala, commended the GOC and the Nigerian Army for using sports as a unifying tool, noting that the tournament has played a significant role in restoring peace and confidence among the people.

The event featured two matches: a third-place game between Hausawa Community and Sigdawa Youth, which ended in favour of Hausawa Community, and a highly competitive final between Mwaghavul Boys and Pyem Youth FC. Mwaghavul Boys emerged champions after a dramatic 8–7 penalty shootout victory. The winners and other participating teams received medals and cash prizes.

The ceremony also included the official flag-off of writing material distribution to schools in Mangu, reinforcing the Army’s support for education and youth development.
