Authorities in Tell City have arrested two parents following the death of their two-year-old son, identified as Erik Reichard, in what investigators suspect to be a case of severe neglect.

According to police, officers responded to a call from the child’s parents, Trevor Reichard-Hayes, 39, and Katherine Carter, 31, who reported that they had not seen the toddler alive for several hours before finding him unresponsive. Despite efforts by first responders to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene on April 3.

Investigators reported that the child appeared severely malnourished at the time he was found. Authorities allege that the parents now face multiple charges, including murder and neglect of a dependent resulting in death and serious bodily injury.

Police said two other children were also removed from the home for their safety.

A spokesperson for the department described the case as distressing for responding officers and partner agencies, adding that the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities further urged the public to allow due process while offering support to those involved in handling the case.
