The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, alongside two other doctors, following findings of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

The child, one of the twin sons of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege, died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a brief illness.

In a statement issued on January 10, 2026, Adichie alleged medical negligence in the events leading to her son’s death. She explained that the toddler had initially developed what appeared to be a common cold, which later progressed into a severe infection. He was subsequently taken to Euracare Hospital in Lagos for an MRI scan and insertion of a central line.

According to her account, the child was sedated with propofol but was not adequately monitored after administration of the drug, resulting in complications, including loss of responsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest.

“He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th,” Adichie stated.

Following the public outcry, the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel was constituted to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.

At the conclusion of its investigation, the panel suspended Majekodunmi; the hospital’s anesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare; and the Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh. The trio has been barred from practicing medicine in Nigeria pending determination of their cases by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

The panel also found a prima facie case of professional misconduct against 10 other doctors: Dr. Adeseye Akinsete, Dr. Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr. Anthony Ajeh, Dr. Amarachi Bayo, Dr. Nkechi Peji, Dr. Olaoye Oludare, Dr. Agaja Oyinkansola, Dr. Patricia Akintan, Dr. Babatunde Bamgboye, and Dr. Raji Faidat.

Eight other doctors investigated in connection with the case were cleared of wrongdoing.

The decisions were reached after the panel reviewed complaints against 21 doctors, examined their counter-affidavits, and considered their sworn oral depositions. The investigation concluded during the panel’s 25th session held in Abuja on February 17 and 18, 2026.
