An overhead water tank containing thousands of litres of water has burst in Malam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State, leaving several residents injured.
The incident, which occurred around midnight on Thursday, took place near the railway line at Shirinya Quarters.
According to a statement by Musa Muhammad, Information Officer for Malam Madori and Kaugama LGAs, the powerful blast from the ruptured tank caused injuries to families living close to the water station.
The victims are currently receiving treatment at the Malam Madori General Hospital, and no deaths have been reported so far.
The overhead tank, which had served as a major water source for Shirinya Quarters and neighbouring communities for years, was said to have shown signs of deterioration before the collapse.
A community member, who spoke anonymously, disclosed that residents had formed a local committee to collect maintenance funds but had struggled to carry out major repairs.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Malam Madori LGA, Salisu Sani Garungabas, assured that urgent steps would be taken to restore the water facility and prevent future occurrences.
He also expressed sympathy to the affected families and pledged the local council’s support for their recovery and resettlement.
