The official Instagram account linked to the Obama-era White House was briefly compromised on Sunday after hackers gained unauthorised access and posted content not authorised by its administrators.
The account, Instagram handle @obamawhitehouse—an archival page documenting the administration of former U.S. President Barack Obama—was affected by the breach before being secured.
A spokesperson for Meta confirmed the incident, stating that the unauthorised posts had been removed and the account fully restored to its rightful custodians.
During the brief takeover, hackers reportedly shared an AI-generated image alongside a caption that translated to: “The White House is under Shiites’ control,” as well as several temporary Instagram Stories before the account was recovered.
Meta said the account has now been secured, though it did not disclose how the breach occurred or who was responsible. The platform added that investigations are ongoing.
The @obamawhitehouse page has largely remained inactive for years, with its last official post dating back to January 20, 2017, the day of President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
As of now, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the hacking incident.
