The Kogi State Government has suspended the annual Echane Festival in Ebiraland with immediate effect, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo.
According to the government, the suspension followed credible intelligence indicating that activities associated with the festival could pose a threat to public peace and potentially lead to a breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
While acknowledging the cultural significance of the festival to the Ebira people, the state government stressed that the safety of residents remains its top priority.
Governor Usman Ododo approved the suspension, directing that the festival be put on hold in the interest of maintaining peace and stability.
The statement further instructed security agencies in the state to enforce the directive and warned that anyone found organising or participating in activities related to the suspended festival would face legal consequences.
It added that the government remains committed to preserving peace across the state and will continue to take proactive steps in response to emerging security concerns.
Traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and residents were also urged to cooperate with security agencies to ensure continued harmony in the affected areas.
