NNPC Restricts ₦66 Per Litre Petrol Discount to Customers Using Mobile App

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has restricted access to its ₦66-per-litre petrol discount to motorists who purchase fuel and make payments through its mobile application.

The development means motorists who pay directly at the pump may not automatically benefit from the discount, despite the Federal Government’s announcement of a temporary price reduction aimed at easing the burden of rising fuel costs on Nigerians.

According to reports, NNPC announced the arrangement on its official X account over the weekend, directing motorists to download its fuel application and use it to complete eligible transactions to enjoy the reduced price.

NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, explained that the promotion was initially introduced to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, running from October 1 to 7, but was subsequently extended until October 31, 2026.

Odeh said the arrangement was designed to ensure effective control, prevent abuse and guarantee that the benefits reached the intended customers. He added that it would encourage wider adoption of the application and improve customer experience.

However, the restriction has sparked concerns among motorists, with some questioning whether the arrangement would allow the discount to reach the ordinary Nigerians it was intended to benefit.

Reports from NNPC filling stations in Abuja indicated that motorists paying directly at the pump were charged ₦1,405 per litre, while customers using the application paid ₦1,339 per litre, representing a difference of ₦66.

Critics have argued that requiring motorists to use a smartphone, internet access and digital payment could exclude some commercial drivers and other fuel consumers who are unfamiliar with mobile applications.

The discount forms part of the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol price relief initiative, introduced to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices, particularly on commercial transport operators and other Nigerians affected by increasing transportation costs.

The promotion is expected to remain in effect until October 31, 2026.
