Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has compared petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, saying Nigerians are paying less for the commodity despite recent increases in pump prices.
Okpebholo made the remarks on Thursday while speaking at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State.
The governor said he visited London the previous week and decided to compare the cost of petrol there with prices in Nigeria.
According to him, the price of a litre of petrol in the UK, after conversion to naira, was more than ₦3,000.
He said the comparison showed that Nigerians were “doing very well” with the current petrol price in the country and praised President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies.
Current UK pump-price data supports the broad difference in nominal prices. The average UK petrol price was around £1.74 per litre on September 24, 2026, which converts to more than ₦3,000 at prevailing exchange rates. In Nigeria, NNPC’s latest listed prices were ₦1,385 per litre in Lagos and ₦1,430 in Abuja, although prices vary across locations.
However, petrol prices in Nigeria have risen in recent weeks amid higher global crude oil prices. Reuters reported that petrol was selling at around ₦1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja, while some stations in northern Nigeria were charging as much as ₦1,500 per litre.
Okpebholo described the Federal Government’s economic reforms as difficult but said he expected the measures to eventually produce improved economic conditions.
Using an aircraft taking off as an analogy, the governor said Nigerians should expect some difficulties during the reform process before the country reaches what he described as a “cruising level”.
He also pointed to ongoing road construction and other infrastructure projects as signs of development under the Tinubu administration.
Okpebholo made the remarks while expressing support for efforts to rehabilitate the Benin-Asaba Road, a major highway linking Edo and Delta states that has faced prolonged deterioration.
The governor also made comments concerning the 2027 political contest, saying those planning to challenge President Tinubu should reconsider their plans and declaring that “Aso Rock is not vacant.”
