A young Nigerian woman identified as Aisha Toro has died after reportedly battling depression and repeatedly expressing concerns about her mental health on social media.
A close friend, Basarakiya, confirmed Aisha’s death in a post on X, announcing that she would be laid to rest on Wednesday, October 7, following a funeral prayer at the Jumma’a Mosque, Senior Staff Quarters, BSADP, Bauchi State.
Before her death, Aisha had openly shared her struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts on X. Her posts became increasingly concerning from October 1, with several messages suggesting that she was experiencing severe emotional distress.
In one of her final posts on October 4, Aisha expressed fears about what might happen to her, before making another brief post shortly afterwards that raised further concerns about her state of mind.
Following news of her death, her friend Basarakiya paid an emotional tribute, revealing that the two had discussed starting over and overcoming their struggles with depression. She also disclosed that they had been making plans together, including looking for a house.
The tragedy has since sparked discussions among social media users about the importance of taking expressions of emotional distress and suicidal thoughts seriously. Some users criticised those around Aisha for allegedly failing to recognise the seriousness of her repeated posts, while others urged people to check on friends and loved ones who may be struggling.
Basarakiya, who came under criticism following Aisha’s death, later announced that she would temporarily deactivate her X account to grieve privately, saying she was struggling to cope with the loss of her friend.
Aisha’s death has renewed calls for greater awareness of depression and mental-health challenges, as well as the need for timely intervention and support for people showing signs of severe emotional distress.
