Nigerian-American poet Daniel Umemezie has been named the 2026–2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate, earning recognition from the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
Umemezie becomes the 10th young poet to hold the prestigious title and the second Nigerian-American to receive the honour.
He follows in the footsteps of Salome Agbaroji, who made history in 2023 as the first Nigerian-American to be named U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate.
Umemezie is recognised for his poetry exploring themes of heritage, identity and the complexities of the Nigerian-American experience. His work reflects the richness of navigating different cultural identities while using poetry as a means of expression and storytelling.

Celebrating his achievement on social media, the U.S. Mission Nigeria described Umemezie as a gifted young Nigerian-American voice whose poetry bridges heritage, identity and the Nigerian-American experience.
The mission also described his achievement as an example of how young people can use creativity to lead, inspire and make an impact.
The National Youth Poet Laureate title recognises outstanding young poets across the United States and provides a platform for emerging literary voices to reach wider audiences.
Umemezie’s appointment further highlights the growing representation and achievements of young Nigerian-American creatives in the US literary and cultural space.
