The Bola Ahmed Tinubu–led administration has opened high-level diplomatic engagements with authorities in Ouagadougou to secure the prompt release of a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft and its personnel detained in Burkina Faso.

According to PRNigeria, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Defence Headquarters, and ECOWAS liaison offices are currently involved in the negotiations.

Sources revealed that Burkina Faso’s civilian aviation authorities and some top military officers were reportedly embarrassed after a political directive reversed the earlier clearance granted to the aircraft.

“The atmosphere on the ground is calm,” an official familiar with the situation confirmed. “The Nigerian personnel were well treated. The issue now is purely political, and both sides are trying to resolve it quietly.”

A defence intelligence source stated that the NAF crew followed all international aviation protocols—declaring an in-flight emergency, requesting the nearest safe landing zone, and receiving official approval before landing in Bobo-Dioulasso. The aircraft reportedly underwent necessary repairs thereafter.

Under ICAO regulations, an aircraft in distress must be granted immediate access to the closest available airspace to guarantee the safety of crew and passengers.

“This is standard aviation practice,” a senior flight operations specialist explained. “Once an emergency is declared, sovereignty issues take a back seat until the crew and aircraft are safe.”

Diplomatic negotiations are ongoing, with officials confident that a resolution will soon be reached. Sources insist Nigeria is handling the matter “quietly but firmly,” given the avoidable escalation and the political undertones surrounding the detention.

“There is no hostility between the two countries,” a diplomat said. “But the internal politics of the AES has complicated what should have been a routine emergency landing.”
