Political strategist Baba Yusuf has said Nigeria must take primary responsibility for tackling its security challenges, stressing that the United States cannot continue to fight the country’s battles.
Speaking during a television interview on Wednesday, Yusuf said while international partnerships remain important, Nigeria must assert its sovereignty by taking decisive action against terrorism and banditry.
According to him, the country should strengthen collaboration with allies while building the capacity to address its internal security challenges independently.
Yusuf also welcomed comments by United States President Donald Trump commending President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in the fight against terrorism, describing the recognition as positive for Nigeria’s international image.
He noted that there appears to be alignment between the Trump administration and the US Congress on issues relating to Nigeria’s security, adding that he had earlier welcomed a congressional resolution addressing the country’s insecurity.
The political strategist, however, questioned whether Nigeria could sustain its current security operations long enough to achieve lasting results.
He also stressed the need to promote peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, particularly between Christians and Muslims, saying national unity remains essential to overcoming the country’s security challenges.
Yusuf acknowledged that the United States has provided military equipment and other forms of support, while noting that security forces have also eliminated some high-ranking terrorist leaders.
Despite these gains, he maintained that the long-term success of the counterterrorism campaign would depend on Nigeria’s ability to sustain its efforts and protect all citizens regardless of religion or background.
He added that, as a Nigerian, his greatest concern is ensuring a peaceful and secure future for Muslims, Christians and people of all beliefs across the country.
