The Federal Government says Nigeria may be compelled to consider reciprocal actions following a surge in reported anti-Nigerian violence in South Africa, which has triggered evacuation efforts for affected citizens.

According to officials, scheduled evacuation flights for Nigerians willing to return home, initially planned to begin on Monday, June 8, have been delayed due to ongoing documentation verification and screening processes being conducted jointly with South African authorities.

The exercise, which began last Thursday, involved over 1,000 Nigerians and was expected to conclude by Saturday, June 13, ahead of the planned repatriation.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, said preparations were still ongoing for those who have opted to return to Nigeria.

She noted that while diplomatic engagement continues, Nigeria is not ruling out possible retaliatory steps, including reviewing privileges currently enjoyed by South African nationals in the country.

“Well, that is a situation that we are considering… this is up to our legislature… this is a decision that has to be taken at the highest level of government,” she said.

The minister stressed that Nigeria’s response would be guided by national interest, adding that “it is not off the table” for the government to consider reciprocal measures.

She also referenced Nigeria’s historical support for South Africa during its struggle against apartheid, noting that Nigeria made significant financial, diplomatic, and moral contributions, including scholarships and international advocacy efforts.

Nigeria and South Africa have long maintained complex diplomatic and economic relations, often marked by cooperation as well as periodic tensions involving citizens of both countries.

Government officials say efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of Nigerians who have opted for evacuation while diplomatic channels remain open to address the underlying concerns.
