The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has responded to a petition calling for the ban or restriction of the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show in public spaces over allegations of obscene and indecent content.
The petition, dated August 4, 2025, was submitted by activist lawyer Idam, who urged the Commission to act within 30 days or face legal action. He argued that the programme violates the NBC Act of 1999 due to its “obscene, indecent, and profane” material.
Acknowledging receipt of the petition, NBC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Pauline Ehusani — writing on behalf of the Director-General — confirmed that the Commission shares concerns about the show’s content.
“The Commission is equally concerned with the brazen contravention of the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code (6th Edition) which clearly prohibit the airing of obscene content,” the NBC stated.
The regulator assured that management is “already on the issue” and that “vital decisions will be taken to ensure compliance with the rules by all concerned.”
In addition, the NBC encouraged Idam and other Nigerians to promptly flag questionable content when it appears on social media, noting that repeated flagging could lead to permanent takedowns.
“The Commission assures you of our commitment to ethical standards,” the statement concluded.
