The Federal Government has confirmed that the national electricity grid has been restored following its collapse on Tuesday, marking the second grid failure recorded since Friday last week.

The Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO) disclosed in an update on Tuesday that the grid collapsed at about 10:48 a.m., but nationwide restoration efforts commenced shortly after, around 11:00 a.m.

According to NISO, the disturbance originated from the Gombe Transmission Substation and quickly spread across the network, affecting key substations including Jebba, Kainji and Ayede.

“The national grid experienced a voltage disturbance which originated from the Gombe Transmission Substation,” the operator stated.

It explained that the disturbance led to the tripping of some transmission lines and generating units, resulting in what it described as a partial system collapse.

“Appropriate corrective actions were immediately implemented to stabilise the system and restore normal operations. Restoration, which began at about 11:11 a.m., has since been completed,” NISO said.

The operator clarified that the incident did not amount to a total grid collapse, contrary to reports circulating earlier, as only parts of the network were affected.

NISO added that the national grid has now been fully restored and electricity supply across the affected areas has returned to normal.
