Former Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has disclosed that his daughter encouraged him to work with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Kwankwaso made the revelation during an interview on ARISE News on Monday while discussing changing political attitudes among young Nigerians.

According to the former Kano governor, many youths are gradually moving away from politics centred on ethnicity and religion, choosing instead to focus on competence, leadership quality, and good governance.

Recounting his personal experience, Kwankwaso said the shift in political thinking was evident even within his family, as his daughter strongly supported the idea of him aligning politically with Peter Obi during the 2023 election season.

He noted that the political preferences of younger Nigerians often differ significantly from those of older generations and warned that many politicians have failed to understand the growing influence of youths and social media on Nigeria’s political environment.

Kwankwaso added that several political leaders have little meaningful interaction with young people despite their increasing role in shaping public opinion and electoral outcomes.

According to him, many younger voters are now looking beyond ethnic and religious considerations and are instead demanding credible leadership capable of addressing the country’s challenges.

He said he agrees with that mindset, stressing that while some politicians still focus heavily on religion and ethnicity, many young Nigerians are more concerned about finding capable leadership for the country.
