Chris Pappas Makes History as First Openly Gay Man Elected to US Senate

Democratic Congressman Chris Pappas has made history after defeating Republican candidate John E. Sununu in the New Hampshire Senate election, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the United States Senate.

Pappas, 46, won the closely contested race in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, securing the seat previously held by retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen.

According to the Associated Press, Sununu conceded defeat shortly after polls closed, paving the way for Pappas to make history as he prepares to take up his new position in January 2027.

Pappas has represented New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District in the US House of Representatives since 2019. Before entering Congress, he served in the New Hampshire legislature and held other public positions, including county treasurer and state executive councilor.

During his victory speech in Manchester, Pappas thanked his supporters and described the election outcome as a wake-up call to political leaders and wealthy interests.

He also acknowledged his husband, Vann Bentley, who stood beside him during the victory celebration, expressing gratitude for his support throughout his political journey.

Pappas’ victory marks a historic milestone for LGBTQ representation in American politics, making him the first openly gay man to secure election to the US Senate. He will join the chamber as Democrats regain control following the midterm elections.
