Manchester United have officially confirmed former captain Michael Carrick as the club’s permanent manager after reaching an agreement on a long-term contract.

The decision, which had reportedly been under consideration for several weeks, has now been approved by key figures within the club, including co-owner Jim Ratcliffe and senior executives.

Carrick is expected to sign a deal believed to be for an initial two years, with the option of an extension, although reports suggest it could also become a straight three-year arrangement depending on future progress.

The former Manchester United midfielder had been serving in an interim role since January before earning the position on a full-time basis following an impressive run of results and growing support within the club hierarchy. Under his leadership, United secured important victories and boosted their hopes of returning to the UEFA Champions League.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday that the club’s direction had been clear for weeks, with Carrick fully backing the agreement and expected to sign the contract soon.

Carrick also confirmed that Brazilian midfielder Casemiro would be available for what could be his farewell appearance at Old Trafford.

Speaking ahead of the club’s match against Nottingham Forest, Carrick said he intends to continue the tradition established by legendary former manager Alex Ferguson by addressing supporters after the game and thanking them for their support.

“The supporters are a massive part of this club. We thank them for the season and for the connection they’ve built with the team,” Carrick said.
