Manchester City have rejected an opening £38.5 million offer from Barcelona for midfielder Rodri, with the Premier League champions reportedly demanding more than £60 million before considering a sale.
The 30-year-old Spaniard is entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and has yet to agree a new deal, fuelling speculation over his future.
Barcelona have emerged as the leading contenders for Rodri’s signature after reportedly receiving his approval to begin negotiations with City. Talks with Real Madrid, who had previously been considered his likely destination, have now ended.
Rodri’s recent seasons have been disrupted by injuries, including a serious knee problem that ruled him out for much of the 2024–25 campaign and a subsequent hamstring issue.
However, the midfielder returned to top form at the World Cup, helping Spain win the tournament and earning the Player of the Tournament award.
Rodri is currently recovering from back surgery and is expected to rejoin his Manchester City teammates early next week.
With the transfer window entering its second week of August, City are keen to resolve the midfielder’s future quickly, particularly as they would need time to identify a replacement if he leaves.
The club are also continuing negotiations for 18-year-old Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi of Lille, although Lille’s reported £86 million asking price remains a major obstacle.
