A 44-year-old man survived after jumping naked from the Brooklyn Bridge into New York City’s East River on Sunday following a standoff with police.
The dramatic incident, captured by bystanders and widely shared on social media, began after the man climbed to the top of the bridge’s north tower.
According to police sources, he removed his clothing after reaching the top and attached a Kazakhstan flag to the bridge.
Officers from the New York Police Department’s Emergency Service Unit climbed the tower and attempted to persuade him to come down safely.
Despite their efforts, the man jumped into the East River while officers were still speaking with him.
The NYPD Harbor Unit, which had already been deployed to the scene, quickly rescued him from the water.
Authorities said the man survived the fall without any apparent physical injuries despite the significant height. He was transported to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
