Gunmen have killed a former councillor of Rim Ward in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Hon. Daniel Danjuma Chong, popularly known as “Hon. Star,” was reportedly shot dead when gunmen attacked Torok Community in Rim on the night of Sunday, August 2, 2026.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday. He alleged that the attack was carried out by suspected armed Fulani militias alongside hired bandits.
According to the statement, another resident, Mr. David Dachollom Danjuma, sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.
“The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), under the leadership of its National President, Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, is saddened by another round of last night’s terror attack that claimed the life of a former legislator of Riyom LGA, which is strongly condemned in its entirety,” the statement read.
BYM said local sources reported that the attackers invaded Torok Community at about 10:45 p.m., opening fire on residents before fleeing the area.
The group further alleged that the assailants retreated towards a nearby Fulani settlement known as Bangai-Fulani after the attack.
BYM extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Torok Community while wishing the injured victim a speedy recovery.
The association called on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to identify and arrest those responsible and to dismantle criminal hideouts in the area.
It also renewed its call for a ban on open grazing, arguing that it has been exploited by criminal elements to facilitate attacks in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State.
Authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of reporting, and the allegations regarding the identity of the attackers have not been independently verified. Investigations are expected to continue.
