LASTMA to Launch Toll-Free Short Code for Real-Time Traffic Reporting in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has announced plans to introduce a dedicated toll-free short code system that will enable residents, particularly motorists, to easily report traffic incidents and access real-time updates.

General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in an interview on Monday, stating that the initiative is aimed at improving communication and accessibility between the agency and the public.

He explained that the new system will replace the current long-digit contact line with a simpler short code to enhance user convenience. According to him, the service is expected to go live within the next two to three weeks, pending final approval from telecom service providers.

“Our call centre will develop a free short code within the next two to three weeks. We’ve made all the necessary preparations and are just waiting for final clearance from the network providers,” Bakare-Oki said.

He noted that the agency is already putting in place the required infrastructure to ensure a smooth rollout once approval is secured.

The planned platform will allow Lagos residents to report a wide range of road-related issues, including traffic congestion, accidents, reckless driving, emergencies, and provide operational feedback.

Bakare-Oki further revealed that LASTMA currently operates a digital call centre staffed by ten responders who handle inquiries in English, Yoruba, and other local dialects.

He added that the agency works in close collaboration with other emergency response bodies such as the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service to ensure timely response to incidents.

According to him, the agency received nearly 300 calls between January and March, although there was a temporary decline due to system adjustments linked to the ongoing upgrade.

“The system has been experiencing downtime because of the integration,” he noted.

Bakare-Oki expressed optimism that the introduction of the short code will significantly improve response time, efficiency, and public engagement once fully operational.

“We assure residents that within the next two to three weeks, we will be fully back online with stronger capacity and improved service delivery,” he added.
