The Kaduna State Government has intensified public awareness and disaster preparedness efforts following the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

According to the forecast, Kaduna State is among the areas expected to experience above-normal rainfall during the 2026 rainy season, placing several communities at high risk of flooding.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the government said proactive measures were already being strengthened through coordinated sensitization campaigns and emergency response initiatives aimed at safeguarding lives and property.

The statement noted that rainfall in Kaduna State is expected to begin between May 19 and June 10, 2026, while the season is projected to end between October 5 and October 21, 2026.

It further revealed that the forecast predicts a possible severe 21-day dry spell between June and August, a development that could worsen flooding and other environmental challenges across the state.

Maiyaki said the state government was treating the forecast with utmost seriousness, stressing that early preparation and public cooperation remained vital in reducing the impact of flooding on vulnerable communities.

He explained that the Ministry of Information and Culture, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), had launched a statewide sensitization campaign to educate residents on flood prevention, mitigation, and safety measures.

Residents were advised to clear drainage systems around homes and business premises, avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse into waterways, and adopt preventive measures such as the use of sandbags and other local flood control methods.

The Commissioner also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, media organizations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to support government efforts by promoting environmental sanitation and disseminating accurate information to the public.

The statement added that KADSEMA had commenced vulnerability assessments in flood-prone communities, strengthened emergency response coordination, and begun pre-positioning rescue materials and personnel in high-risk areas.

Maiyaki reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting residents throughout the rainy season, noting that collaboration with relevant agencies and communities would continue to ensure timely information sharing and effective disaster risk reduction.
