In a major political shakeup, the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan, has officially resigned from his position, citing a desire to continue serving the state in other capacities. His resignation, effective July 2, marks a pivotal moment in the state’s legislative landscape.
In a formal letter addressed to fellow lawmakers and the people of Plateau State, Dewan expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve. He highlighted his efforts at consensus-building, legislative progress, and collaboration with the executive arm under Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
“I leave this office with no regrets, knowing that I gave my best in the service of our state,” Dewan stated, while acknowledging both successes and personal limitations encountered during his tenure. He thanked his colleagues, Assembly staff, and citizens for their trust and support, reaffirming his continued commitment to justice, fairness, and the development of Plateau State.
The resignation of Dewan, the only member of the Assembly elected under the Young Progressives Party (YPP), is widely seen by political analysts as a strategic decision aimed at promoting unity and stability within the legislature.
In a swift response to the leadership vacuum, the House of Assembly, during an emergency plenary session held at the temporary legislative chambers in the Old Government House, Jos, elected Hon. Nanloong Daniel as the new Speaker.
Daniel, who represents Mikang State Constituency and previously served as Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly, received unanimous support from all 24 members present. His nomination was moved by Hon. Nanbol Listick (Langtang North Central) and seconded by Hon. Abdul Yanga (Mangu North East). The session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Hon. Gwotta Ajang, who oversaw the seamless transition process.
Hon. Daniel’s emergence is expected to usher in a new era of leadership as the Assembly continues its legislative and oversight responsibilities amid evolving political dynamics in the state.
With Dewan’s dignified exit and Daniel’s unanimous election, the Plateau State House of Assembly is poised for renewed cooperation and legislative stability.
