The Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state as a precautionary measure against suspected cases of diphtheria infection.
The directive takes effect from Monday, September 7, 2026, and applies to schools that have already resumed academic activities.
According to the state government, the decision is aimed at preventing the spread of the suspected diphtheria outbreak reported in parts of the state.
The affected areas include Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
The government directed all schools to remain closed until further notice, pending further assessment of the situation.
School proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians have been urged to comply fully with the directive.
They are also expected to ensure that pupils and students remain safely at home throughout the period.
The government said the measure is intended to protect the health and wellbeing of pupils, students, teaching and non-teaching staff.
It appealed to all stakeholders to cooperate with the directive as the government continues to take appropriate measures to safeguard residents of the state.
The government said further information on the resumption of academic activities would be communicated to the public in due course.
