Plateau State marked this year’s Democracy Day with a series of major project commissioning across key sectors, highlighting the administration’s commitment to infrastructure, healthcare, education, and public welfare.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang led the celebrations with the commissioning of multiple transformative projects, signaling a new phase in the state’s development agenda under his “Time is Now” mantra.

At the Old Government House in Rayfield, the governor unveiled 15 brand-new Tin City Metro Buses under the revitalized Plateau Express Service. Designed to ease intra-city transportation, the modern buses are expected to boost economic activity, reduce traffic congestion, and provide safe and affordable transport for residents. Each ride will cost ₦400, a significant relief in the face of rising transportation costs.

Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Davou Jatau Gyang, noted that the initiative could save regular commuters up to ₦50,000 monthly. He emphasized that the vehicles were newly procured using state funds, underscoring a commitment to prudent governance.

Governor Mutfwang also disclosed plans to expand transport infrastructure through the development of a new airport terminal, the revival of railway services, and partnerships with Chinese investors.

In the health sector, the governor commissioned a high-tech diagnostic laboratory, a pediatric ward, and a modern administrative block at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital. With medical equipment worth over ₦2 billion and the introduction of an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, the facility is set to deliver cutting-edge healthcare services.

Prof. Christopher Yilgwan, the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, commended the administration for upgrading previously abandoned projects to global standards. He noted that the improvements could help curb medical tourism by offering quality care within the state.

At Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi, Governor Mutfwang commissioned a newly constructed administrative building and a renovated hall named in honor of former Governor Joshua Dariye. The visit also highlighted the institution’s recent reaccreditation achievements.

Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Elizabeth Wapkuk, expressed optimism about the polytechnic’s renewed credibility, while the governor shared plans to upgrade the institution into a University of Science and Technology. He assured staff that those with valid employment statuses will retain their jobs amid broader reforms to enhance academic standards.

Additionally, the governor commissioned the Utonkon Bridge and connecting roads at the Utonkon Abattoir Road, a project expected to open up a vital agricultural corridor. The infrastructure will improve travel time, enhance safety, and spur local economic growth.

A symbolic moment during the day’s events came when the governor introduced one of the newly recruited Metro Bus drivers—a young woman he had sponsored years ago for mechanical training. Her journey from trainee to driver served as a testament to the administration’s focus on youth and women empowerment.

Governor Mutfwang affirmed that the day was not just a celebration of democracy but a demonstration of tangible progress. “We are committed to delivering real impact in the lives of our people. This Democracy Day is a reminder that good governance can be seen, felt, and measured,” he said.
