The newly sworn-in Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has expressed support for the proposed establishment of state police in Nigeria.
Disu made the remark while speaking on the committee set up to work on the implementation of state policing shortly after his swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions on decentralising policing in the country, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s call on the Senate to expedite action on legislation that would enable the creation of state police.
Speaking on Wednesday, the new police chief said the Nigeria Police Force is ready to contribute to the process and ensure the initiative succeeds.
“From the angle of the Nigerian Police, we don’t want it to seem as if others are taking decisions, and we, the most important people concerned, didn’t do anything,” Disu said.
“We want to ensure that the best thing is done. The police should be able to contribute and do their own part in making it succeed.
“The police are not afraid. Our jobs are not being taken; it’s just an issue of partnership.”
