Iran has executed two men convicted of spying for Israel, according to the country’s judiciary, in the latest case linked to alleged espionage activities.
The executions, carried out on Monday, come amid heightened tensions following recent conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States, as Tehran continues its crackdown on individuals accused of collaborating with foreign intelligence services.
According to Mizan, the Iranian judiciary’s official news outlet, the two men were convicted of transmitting the locations of sensitive military and security facilities to agents of Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency.
Iranian authorities said the pair were found guilty of espionage and collaboration with what they described as the “Zionist regime,” alleging that the information they provided aided Israeli intelligence operations during the conflict.
The judiciary, however, did not disclose when the men were arrested or when their trial was conducted.
The executions are part of a broader increase in Iran’s use of capital punishment in cases involving alleged espionage, sabotage and collaboration with foreign governments since fighting involving Iran, Israel and the United States escalated earlier this year.
Iran has announced several executions in recent months involving individuals accused of working with Israeli intelligence, as authorities maintain that such measures are necessary to protect national security.
